New Arrivals 2017
This has been a very rough year for us. Between does kidding before I was able to move them to our new house, so I wasn't there to help with new babies, does kidding unexpectedly, and a doe beating up new babies, we've lost far too many kids this year. It has been a horrible learning experience, that I will take with me to the coming years to ensure things like this don't happen again.

2 doelings, 1 buckling (deceased)
This was one of the toughest kiddings I've had. When I arrived home from work at about 6 am I discovered that Spot had kidded, and though she acted like she was done, I could feel more babies when I bumped her belly. When I went in to see if there was a baby stuck that she needed help with I discovered that she had stopped labor and her cervix was starting to close up. My best friend came over to try to help, and we called vet after vet, but no one was available until sometime in the afternoon. When we realized that the c-section she needed wasn't go to happen we decided to do whatever we could to try to save her. We gave her steroids and a hormone to start her labor back up. Then took turns massaging her cervix to manually dilate it. We found the buckling, who had been dead for a couple days pressed against her cervix, butt first, which is why she wasn't able to deliver him. When we finally got him out we found one more doeling behind him, who was still alive and well. Amazingly, Spot and both doelings are well.

Triplets - 2 does, 1 buck
Capella decided to pretend she was close for a couple days before actually delivering. She went right before I had to leave for work. The first baby gave me some trouble. She was coming out front feet first, with her head turned back and to the side. Not the worst position, but if you can't push the baby back and bring the head forward you've got a fair chance of breaking the baby's neck. I wasn't able to do so, but the baby came through just fine. Baby number two came out butt first, and the third came out in the proper position. All are great, and Capella has more than enough milk for all 3. I've actually had to milk her to keep her udder even.

Triplets - 1 doe, 2 bucks
All moonspotted
Party decided to kid when I was horribly sick with bronchitis. When I finally convinced myself to go check on her about 2 am, she already had all 3 dried and up nursing. Of course, she went to the far corner of the pen, and had them outside in the dirt, instead of under shelter. Trying to help things I moved them all back to the shelter, then stumbled off to bed. When I got up the next morning one of the boys was dead. He appeared to have been stepped on. Still too sick to think straight I pulled him out, and left everybody else. The next day the little girl was gone too. At that point I realized I had a doe beating up the new babies, and moved Party and her last kid to a different pen, and he is thriving on enough milk for 3.

Quads - 1 doe, 3 bucks
This was a tough one. Chai didn't give any indication beforehand that she was getting close, so I wasn't paying very close attention. I had all of the bucks get into the doe pen one day, but thought I was safe, that no one got bred. Unfortunately Chai did. Since I wasn't watching, two of the four didn't make it out of their sacs, leaving the girl, and the runt boy. I ended up taking the boy in the house, and he spent the night sleeping on me, tucked in my shirt trying to keep him warm, feeding him as often as I could convince him to eat, but he was gone by morning. The girl had been doing well, and I thought she would be fine, but I found her gone as well a few days later. Such a tough year for Chai.

Cassi kidded nice and easy, no drama, and is a great mama. As usual. Her girls both left as bottle babies, so her boy is growing like crazy with all the milk to himself.

Triplets - 3 bucks
I noticed that Goldie was getting close when I was headed to work. Thankfully my little sister was home for spring break, so I asked her to go check on her in a couple hours. When she got there Goldie had 2 babies on the ground, and would periodically lay down to push, with nothing happening. Since she wasn't comfortable going in to see what was going on, my friend came over to help, and it's a good thing she did. The 3rd baby was presenting chest first. Front legs back, and head tucked underneath. It took a lot of effort to get him out, and unfortunately he didn't make it. The two boys that lived are beautiful, and I'll be keeping one for my own herd.

Andromeda isn't the friendliest goat, so I'd only realized she was for sure bred a couple days before she kidded when I finally caught her and discovered she was developing an udder. She had her boys unassisted, and is being a wonderful mom.

Quads - 2 does, 2 bucks
Elly spits her babies out faster than any other doe we've had. Which is great, but can also be a problem when she has 4 babies, and no one is there to help clean them up. I arrived just after she had her babies this time. She had one of the girls and both boys clean, but hadn't been able to get the last girl out of the sac in time. Elly has tons of milk, and the 3 remaining babies are growing like crazy.

I had begun to think that Sangie had not actually come bred, and had just been bred by one of my boys, but she finally decided to kid at 2 am. Unfortunately she accidentally lay on the boy while I was warming back up in the house for a bit, so I lost him. The smaller girl was not fully developed, and despite a friend who had more time than I bringing her in the house, tube feeding her, and taking as good a care as possible, she didn't make it either. Thankfully Chianti is strong, and doing great.
