Our last kidding of the year was smooth, thank goodness. No fuss during delivery, and Ki is a good mom. The only concern came right after when Indy's umbilical didn't stop right away, so there was a little extra bleeding. But, all is well now, and Indy is retained. (D58)

June decided to wait until we were taking goats to the AGS National Show, so yet another kidding I missed, though she wasn't alone. A fairly easy kidding, even though she had a good-sized single. Nightshade gave us 2 girls this year, so we are keeping both. (D57)

Twin bucks born June 16, 2013 at 8 pm
So frustrating. Part of the reason for Honey's purchase was because we really liked the bucks she was bred to, and we wanted to keep a doeling. Instead we ended up with twin boys. They're cute little guys, but not what we were hoping for. (D55 & D56)

Single doe born Jun 16, 2913 at 2:30 am
Malibu decided to string people along. My sister thought she was going to go any minute for a few hours, my mom thought she was going to hold out until at least a couple hours after I got home from work. Both were wrong. She decided the middle of the night was reasonable, and though the delivery of her 4 lb baby wasn't especially difficult, she did wake people up with her yelling, so she wasn't alone for the delivery.

I had checked on the girls around 3 am, and determined that Cosmos' ligaments were almost gone, but could still feel a hint of them, so I knew she was close, but thought we still had a few hours. Wrong. She ended up kidding by herself, with the first morning check arriving to help dry them off. Apparently everything went pretty smoothly, unfortunately, she had boys. Oh well.

Pippin Hill MB Sapphire x Rebel Acres CC Nightshade
Single doe born June 6, 2013 at 4:10 pm
This was a busy couple hours for us. As we were working on getting Paint's boy out Sapphire decided to start pushing. We knew it was going to be close when we saw her cleaning and trying to steal another doe's baby, we just didn't realize we'd have 2 going at once. Thankfully Paint was finished up so we could concentrate on Sapphire just in time for her little girl's arrival. A bit of a stretch, she's not a huge doe, but her 3 lb 4 oz girl made it out pretty easily, with not much fanfare, especially in relation to Paint. This is our first Nightshade baby, and we love that her white marking are just like his. She also looks awesome in general. We're very pleased with him so far.

Yet another rough delivery for poor Paint. The doeling came out pretty easily, and was up right away. The boy, on the other hand, presented with both front feet, and no head. We tried pushing him back in, and fishing for the head, but came up with nothing. To be honest, there was a little while there that I thought he was malformed, and had no head. (It does happen, though not often.) We had to call in a friend, who was able to get him pushed back, find his head which was tucked under and behind one of his front legs, and get him out. Unfortunately, he didn't survive. As that is the second delivery in a row that a baby has had to be pushed back in and the head fished for, we are concerned that Paint's body will not withstand additional deliveries, so she will possibly be retired and sold as a pet.

Single doe born June 6, 2013 at 2:30 pm
Usually when the does' ligaments are "gone" they will kid within 12 hours. Dakota's were gone around 5 pm the previous day. Knowing how concerned my little sister was about Dakota kidding I stayed up most of the night to check her often, finally going to bed expecting to get a call in a few hours that it was time. A bit frustrating to have her wait until afternoon. She did great though, no problems, just a little pull from us to help out. She wasn't entirely sure what to do with the baby when we put her in front of her to clean, but she eventually figured it out, and is becoming an excellent mother.

Single buck born June 3, 2013 at 9 pm
I was in a bit of trouble over this delivery. I had to go to work, knowing Pequot was in labor, and leaving Mom in charge. Pequot is very well grown, but she is a first freshener, and with a single, the baby was pretty big. He weighed in at 4.5 lbs, and his head was turned a little, making it more difficult for him to come out. After about an hour of pushing he finally was delivered, and both Pequot and baby are doing well.

We've been so hopeful that Oreo would have a girl we could keep, as we really liked the buck she was bred to. No such luck. Both boys are very cute, almost identical, and particularly amusing with their antics. Oreo had a bit of a long labor, but both boys made it out with relatively little fuss.

Maggie is the first to kid this year completely on her own. I checked her in the wee hours and found her to be in labor, but knew she had a few hours still to go. Mom went out as soon as she saw my text and found both babies already on the ground, though still wet. So, no problems, and Maggie is being an excellent and very protective mother.

Tink is a VERY lovey goat when she's getting close to delivery. When I got home from work and checked on her she wanted me to only pay attention to her, and followed me as I checked on everyone else as well. She was not pleased when I left the pen, giving me a very hurt look. As she got closer and we hung out in the pen with her she stayed right by us, gently demanding we pet and scratch her. Though her babies are not huge, the boy just over 3 lbs, the girl just under, she had a bit of a difficult time getting the boy out. She may have been able to do it on her own, but I'm glad we were there to help out so she didn't have to tire herself out as much. Little girl came out easy after that. These are also the first kids I've gotten from Tink that were not cream/gold. Such a nice change, even if they aren't super flashy.

I do so love uneventful kiddings, especially when they produce all girls. Once again Ashley got to be midwife, though I arrived in time to see the last baby emerge. All the babies were over 3 lbs, and Nutmeg and babies are doing well. We'll be keeping one of these girls, the other 2 will be available.

Apparently Lush got bred on the same day Teaberry did when the bucks got in with the girls. Going by the looks of the baby, who is a carbon copy of Boots, we're guessing Boots is the daddy, but the boy will be wethered since we can't be 100% sure. It was a bit of a surprise to get the call that she was in labor this morning, since we had thought she wasn't due for a couple more weeks. He was a big boy, and I'm glad my sister found Lush in labor so that we were able to assist. He's second in size to only one other, weighing in at 4lb 6 oz. No pic available. He was sold as a bottle baby, before I had the chance to get out with the camera.

Velvet-Acres Teaberry x Poppy Patch Huckleberry
Triplets, 2 bucks, 1 doe born May 15, 2013 at 4:15 pm
We've been waiting for Teaberry to kid for over a month now. She was supposed to be bred to Cree, but as her due date came and went it became apparent that was not the case. So, we went back through our notes and found that if she was bred on the day that several of the bucks got into the doe pen then she would be due on May 13th. Which left us the issue of determining who the sire actually was. We were a little surprised to discover wattles on one of the boys, so he can only be a Huck baby, and have the girl be chocolate colored, but it's a nice cross, and we are not disappointed. Last year Tea very carefully waited until no one was home to kid, this year she had to put up with midwives, and I'm glad we were there to help. She could have done it, but the first boy came out butt first, and I think a little help made things a lot easier on her. The 2nd came out standard positioning, and the girl came out head first, with legs tucked back. We'll be splitting a song title for the breech boy, and the girl. She will be Heads Carolina, he will be Tails California.

Cassi was the 3rd of our 2 yr old first fresheners to kid this year, and considering the previous 2 we were a little nervous. Unfortunately I was at work, so Mom had to deal with this delivery, but everyone made it through ok. The first baby was a bit awkwardly positioned, so did require some help for delivery, but the second came out easily enough. The first born appeared to be black at first, but on closer inspection she is a very dark chocolate color, with a couple random white hairs, but is essentially solid, which makes her blue eyes really stand out. We will be retaining one of the babies, the other is available. Cassi has a lovely udder, and her kids have nice potential.

I sure appreciate getting twin girls from Magic on Mother's Day, I just wish I had been there for the delivery. Magic was her usual very noisy and dramatic self hours before she kidded. I stayed up when I got home from work until her yelling woke someone else up, and went to get some sleep. Unfortunately my ringer on my phone got turned off, so when my sister tried to call to let me know it was time I slept right through it. They're beautiful girls, as I expect from this cross!

As usual, Chai gave us twins. Unfortunately both are boys, since I had someone hoping for a girl from her. These boys are big even for Chai though. Poor girl, I'm glad we were there to give her a little help getting them out. The first weighed in at 4 lbs, 1 oz. The other at 4 lb, 15 oz. That's the biggest baby we've had born here ever. One of the boys has blue eyes, unfortunately neither polled. One or both may be available as bucks, I'll evaluate over the next couple days and decide.

Sun Catcher SC White Cloud x Poppy Patch SM Huckleberry
Buck/Doe twins born May 2, 2013 at 2:30pm
I had to wait on writing this one up for a few days, I wasn't ready at the time. We've had some rough deliveries, and this one is right up there in running for the worst. When we went out in the morning Cloud was very obviously ill. I was guessing Polio, or Ketosis, the vet thought Calcium Deficiency when we called him. So, we got an IV of calcium going, and she got worse. We're guessing now that she actually had too much calcium, so our treatment was killing her. Unfortunately, symptoms of so many goat issues present pretty much exactly the same, so it can be very hard to treat. I won't go into all the gory details. Suffice it to say that we did an emergency c-section, and put her down partway through. Her babies are doing very well, especially considering their entrance to the world. We're trying to get a doe who's babies are weaned to adopt them, and it's going ok. We have to hold her to let them eat, but she's not aggressive toward them, and is starting to be protective. Both will be available. Pics coming soon.

Twin BE does born April 30, 2013 at 10:45 pm
Diamond does like to frustrate us. In at least 2 of her previous 3 kiddings she went on day 143. (She was pen bred the other, so we didn't have a due date.) So, imagine my irritation that she waited until day 147. Both were nice and big, but not a problem for Diamond. Both were out very quickly, and easily, and were up nursing in a couple minutes. Both have blue eyes, though neither is polled.

I can't say much about this delivery, as I missed it. I got home from work, checked Lagoon and found her ligaments were gone, but she wasn't in labor yet. Texted Mom to let her know, and went to bed. By the time I got up she had kidded with a BIG baby, and not a lot of fuss. This little girl is gorgeous, she looks a lot like Boots, but with Lagoon's blue eyes. Someone needs to buy her before we're too tempted and decide to keep her!

Quints: 3 boys, 2 girls born April 19, 2013 at 3:45 am
Yes, you read that right. PW had 5 babies this year. Our first set of quints, and in fact, we've only had 1 set of quads here before either. It was pretty chaotic dealing with this delivery. I had been outside for about 6 hours watching and waiting (we need a camera!) and once Uptown delivered we decided to go in, get a bite to eat, relax and get warm, then go back out to check on PW's progress. As I was walking back out at 4 I thought I heard new baby voices mixed with mama talking, but wasn't sure if it was coming from her, or the other new ones. I arrived to find 2 tiny babies on the ground, and knew with her size there was no way she was done, so called Mom to get outside right away. 3 & 4 arrived about 15 minutes later close together, then # 5 made his debut after another 10 minutes or so. Poor PW was exhausted by this point, so the last baby took some effort, especially since he was the biggest of all the babies, but we were able to help her get him out relatively quickly. The first born baby boy is very small, and developmentally is preemie, so he lives in the house with Tauri's preemie and is being bottle-fed. The rest are living with their mom and are doing well. She should have no problem keeping all of them fed. UPDATE: 2 days after delivering we lost the bigger chocolate colored buckling, and almost lost PW as well. As far as we can tell she had a bit of an infection, as well as a calcium deficiency. It was very sudden, and very fast, and only by throwing a lot of stuff at PW did we manage to save her. She seems to have recovered, and the remaining babies are doing well, even the smallest that we expected to lose.

After waiting and watching her for hours, until we were ready to just squeeze the babies out, Uptown FINALLY decided to get down to business in the wee hours of the morning. Once she did she popped the babies out with no problem, gracing us with lovely twin girls. One black with white, the other white with black. Now, if only she decides to go during the daylight hours in the future she'll be much more popular.

Well, I was glad to see Summer not kid at 5am, which is what she did her first 2 kiddings. I really thought she was going to have triplets, but instead she had big twins. I also thought the boy was a girl at first when just glancing during cleanup, so was quite disappointed to discover he was a boy once we had him dry. Oh well. He'll make a cute pet wether for someone.

Lil Roughnecks Done It x Prairie Wood TG Desert Sage
Twin does born April 17, 2013 at 4pm
A nice easy birth for Done It, despite the size of her girls. We knew she was very close, so we were keeping a close eye on her as we did chores, and sure enough we weren't quite done when a yell came that Done It was kidding. Both kids were out in just a few minutes. The first doeling weighed 3 lbs 15 oz, the second was 3 lbs 10 oz. Everyone is doing well. These are Sage's first kids, and we like what we see, though they're both noisy!

Sun Catcher G Tauri x GraniteAcres NB Cree
Buck/doe twins born April 16, 2013 at 4:30 pm
This was a hard one. We have our does in several different pens depending on their stage of gestation. Tauri was in the less than 2 weeks, but not yet imminent pen. She hadn't even had her kidding clip; that was planned for the following day. We discovered Tauri had kidded 7 days premature when we went out to feed and she showed up having obviously just given birth. An immediate search turned up two babies. The girl was already gone, and I thought the boy was as well until I realized his chest was moving ever so slightly. I scooped him up and ran for the house where I put him in a sink of warm water to wash the birthing fluids and dirt off, then we used a hair dryer and heating pad to finally get his temp up enough to take a bottle. We are guardedly optimistic as to his chance to make it. We've named him "I'm A Survivor" in hopes he lives up to it. This is especially tough as Tauri was one of only 2 does bred to Cree, and he was stolen from the buck pen the week before this. In the picture my sister is holding her hand out to show just how small he is. He weighed in at a whopping 1 lb 5 oz. UPDATE: At a week old, I'm not too worried about "Squeak". He's eating very well, and loves to go outside and run around. It's amazing to see him. And amazing how much he looks like his granddam Diamond.

Camino Allegre Tinker Bell x Prairie Wood JB Sitka Spruce
Buck/doe twins born April 16, 2013 at 2:30 pm
I call Bell our sneak attacker when it comes to delivering babies. Last year we had no idea she was in labor until she lay down and started pushing since we were busy with another goat's delivery. This year I knew she was getting close because her ligaments were gone, but didn't see any contractions until I walked by the pen and saw her laying down pushing. The boy came out first, and was almost 4 pounds. The girl wasn't far behind weighing in at 3 lbs 4 oz. Both were up within a couple minutes, and are doing wonderfully.

Rebel Acres CA Ellie Mae x End Of The Line WithMyBootsOn
Buck twins born April 14, 2013 at 8:45 pm
Ellie thankfully had an easy delivery, as I was at work and Mom wasn't home either, so my younger sisters assisted. I like what I'm seeing with Ellie's udder so far, though her teats are pretty small at this point. Twin boys is not a very auspicious start to our kidding schedule, hopefully it will improve. While Ellie did not appear to inherit moonspots from her sire, she is passing them on. The brown and white boy definitely has one on his neck, you can sort of see the lighter coloring in this picture.

Buck/Doe Twins born March 25, 2013 at 3pm
We have very anxiously awaited these kids since we bought Myst bred in December, so I was very excited to find Myst in labor when I got home from work. I stayed up an extra couple hours to check on her, until close to when Mom would be getting up, then headed to bed. When she finally kidded it was very sudden. She had the little boy as Mom was walking out to check on her again, and the little girl a few minutes later when we were there. The poor girl shot out in one contraction so fast she actually hit the North wall of the barn. Hence her name. Both babies are good-sized. The boy weighed 4 lb 3 oz, and the girl 3 lb 8 oz. Mom and babies are doing very well. These kids will carry the New Creations herd name.
